hey EJ !!! i am not sure if you are asking me or someone else this question but...here is what i use:
i start with an 9/0 pen reel loaded with 50 lb. test camo line...350 yards...topped off with 300 yards of 80 lb. test mono wire line. my rig is 20 feet of heavy 400 lb. test weedeater mono style cord whic is attached to a 3/32 steel plastic coated cable 8 feet in length WITH A SWIVEL IN BETWEEN THE TWO LINES....i attach 1 18/0 "j" hook at the end of the cable and then attach another 16/0 "j" hook to the eye of the 18/0 "j" hook woith a 8 inch steel leader....about 2 feet above the hooks i attach two cable crimps approx. 1 foot appart and i have a swivel inbetween them which slides back and forth...for a weight i tie a 20# mono leader 10 inches or so long to the swivel which is inbetween the cable crimps and then i tie a home made re-bar four way grapling hook to the tag end of the 20# mono. this holds the bait down solid. when the bait 16" or so blue fish is picked up, the fish runs with the bait and makes it about 2 feet thus hiting the end of the line attached to the weight...the 20# mono then sets the hook and then the weight of the pull breaks the mono thus leaving the weight behind...thats about it. hope this helps...jim

Im not geared up NEARLY that big ;D
I have a Shimano Corsair with 12lb test on a 7' graphite rod .... and a couple of med action spinning reels from 4lb test to 20 lb test. I have had a lot of fun catching bass on my ultralight setup... but in Salt water I try not to mess around too much. Im happy catching Specks and Reds along with the occasional Flounder ..one of these days I will have to get me a "real" surf set up. They make big spinning reels for such dont they ?

yes they do make spinning reels..however if you are going to be surf casting you need to get yu a 10 foot minimum rod...reel does not have to be all that big...put say 30 lb. test spider wire or tough line on it....need to casta long ways out...if casting i will help you set up your rig...i run my baits out with a kayak...300 yards or so off the beach.
