I think they should split the breed. We'll just register ours as catahoula curs since that's what we all call them anyway.

Ripper & EJ, You'll know I love Catahoulas but I also love a good hunting dog. That's my goal is to have catahoulas that are good woods dogs. Staying with the blocky headed dogs with what ever color and eyes it comes out. Breeding only dogs that work in the woods. Don't say mine are better than any other breed but they suit me and I feed them. Improveing the breed through select breeding and training. Staying with the ones that have a better nose and love to hunt. I need spotted dogs because I can't tell solid colors apart, dur to eyesight and color blind. Been there and done that, so now just trying to improve.

Mr. Mason, everybody knows catahoulas are my favorite also but it's folks that raise puppies only because of eyes and color that make it so hard on folks like you and me that are trying to make dogs better and bring them back to there orginal intent. My Dad's color blind also, I've never even thought about if that's why he started with catahoula dogs to begin with.

the "colors" and glass eyes are an afterthought .... if that is what comes out ..GREAT! .. if they are all solid or saddleback....GREAT! ..... its what they came OUT of that matters more than any colors ..... and the people that breed ONLY for color that we can blame the bad experiences people have with Catahoulas ... (this can be applied to ANY breed that has a trademark color ....)

Chad, We both know there are two sets of Catahoulas, one for hunting and working and the other is the pet homes and show dog. Sad but true that some of the pet breeders get more for their pups than I can get for a started dog in the woods.

Mr. Mason
I believe there is three in my part of the world at least. You got the bay pen dogs, the show and pet dogs, and then the hunting and working dogs.
P.S. I got the pictures made of the two new puppies and some of the dogs we've had for awhile but I haven't posted pictures of. I'll post them for you to tell me what you think as soon as I get the film developed. I've about decieded to give up on keeping up papers and just make the dogs what they should be. The papers aren't important to us hunters anyway. It's the show ring and bay pen guys that seem to get all caught up in them. I'm more concerned about keeping accurate breeding records and maybe AKC or someone will register the dogs for record keepings purposes. NALC is way to hard to deal with.
