Chad, We all want dog with natural abilitys for hunting but it takes longer to make a good woods dog that uses it nose and finds hogs than it takes to make a baying pen dog. I have just come in from working three young pups, turned a small pig aloose and then put them on the trail. I had to keep bring them back to the starting point and letting them do it over before one of them finaly got out and found it in the brush. Makeing them use their nose is what I think is important. When I have an excess # of small hogs I turn one out at a time and let the pups find it, it becomes a game and they look forward to getting out and finding the pig.

The bay pen dogs really agrevate me because so many people just breed dogs based on there abilities in a pen. Nose and hunt get breed out of the dogs and to me those are the two hardiest traits to find in catahoula dogs today. We are working hard to find dogs with the traits we like. I've got a 18 mth old that has a tremendous nose on him but is not showing the hunt I wish he did. I'm being patient with him because he continues to improve. We turned a hog out for him the other day in a cut over corn field. He worked the sign out and finally found the hog. I believe it done him some good because it's teaching him that if he will trust his nose he can find a hog and that dog flat loves to get after a hog once he finds one.
