I have heard that Catahoulas mature a little slower than some of the other cur breeds. I know all dogs are individuals and have their own particular personalities, but as a general rule when do Catahoulas "turn on"? And is there a difference between males and females as to when this happens?

My Male started baying at 4 months and found his first hog at 6 months ..... My female is about 2 and is just NOW starting to hunt more .... she hasnt found a hog on her own ... but is a good pack dog until she gets it together .... thast just MY experience with full blooded Catahoulas .... Im sure they ALL vary just like people.

I think it depends on the breeding of the dogs. You have to see what the norm is for the line you are hunting. The Bo dog of mine was 18 mths when I got her but had never been hunted outside a pen. The first time I took she found and bayed a hog. But I have a male that I got when he was nine mths old and he is now 13 mths and still acts like a puppy the majority of the time. Some times he is hunting and sometimes playing. I still have because he hates a hog and will bay one. He has found his own hog and shows sign of getting better. I don't think there is a good answer to your question without you checking on your line of dogs. My dad's catahoulas started real early. Many of them were finding and baying up there own hogs at 6 mths old. I've heard such a wide range on catahoulas that the only logical explanation is it depends on the line.
