#1 What you are calling them and the way you replied to Mr. Mason makes me wonder about you in the first place
#2 That is the last place a person should go to find a good woods dog. Those are one of the main reasons good catahoula woods dogs are so hard to find. Pens are good to show a pup a hog but after that they prove nothing about a pups parents or a line of dog other than that they can bay a hog in a pen.

I think what Vikingpimp meant was a "hog baying" rather than a full on catch comp ...... meaning its better that the dogs at least will bark at a hog than being the product of some backyard breeder just breeding for glass eyes and pretty spots.

Our Labs will bay hogs in a pen, LOL!! Maybe I can teach them to retrive hogs like they do dove and duck, HAHA!! ;D Of course my dad had two or three catahoula that would hunt hogs, work cows, and pick up birds so who knows. I'm a firm believer in that a dog is at it's very best when used the way it was intended. Hunting dogs weren't made to bark at a pig in a pen and they dang sure weren't intended to be paraded around a show ring like some poodle. Hog Ripper

ripper i agree with you bay contests as well as breeding standards are hurting the breed badly but i was talking from the point of view that you are looking for a dog and you have no info to start with and it would be better to go to a contest{where i am from they do call them hog dog rodeos} and at least see the parents bay a hog me personaly i dont paticapate in bay pens i am a hunterand love pure woods dogs, and desire and nose is what should separate them from pen dogs but baying and abilty are important too and at least yoyu would get to see that.and concerning MR. mason i was not trying to be rude, but that was my first day on this site and he kinda jumps on me for veering of subject,i mean i would under stand if was using bad words or talking about britney spears or being rude butr if i offended anyone i am sorr its just that i lost 2 freinds and a cousin in iraq and spent 6 months there myself and i get touchy when people try to trampel on any ones freedom

Vikingpimp
Where you from? The only people I've heard use that terms were anti's that come on hunters sites trying to act like one of us to gain information to use against us.
I have nothing but respect for our service men and women and what they are sacraficing for their country, I assure you. I good friend and hunting buddy of mind (Dirt of the Board) just got sent back to Afgantisan for the second time and I have several other friends serving as well. I'm sure you are all right, just be carefull what you type. I for one have made the mistake many times of letting my fingers get ahead of my brain, LOL.
I stand behind what I said though. I agree baying is a very important thing but you don't see many people that are willing to put there best woods dog in a bay pen contest. That's no place to start when looking for dogs. Bay pens have almost ruined several solid breeds of dogs and I can get very aggrevated when we get on that subject.
Take care man,

Vikingpimp, It is behind us man. I was trying to get back on subject also. I live in SE Georgia and always have. I love to hog hunt and try to go every chance I get which is usually about 4 hunts a week. I am in an unusally good mode because last night I finally found some dogs that go all the way back to my dad's orginal catahoulas and Sunday I am supposed to meet the lady to get a pair of 3 mth old pups that where line breed all the way back to daddy's original three dogs. I've been trying for years now to make this happen and now I'm only four days away. ;D. staroutdoors.proboards26.com/index.cgi?board=hoggin&action=display&thread=1095356103There is a recent thread on this board that will tell you a lot about what me and everyone else has as far as dogs go. Later, Chad

S.C. just an hour and half from me. The lady got the dogs the same time as daddy and then got several pups from daddy to continue the line. She used to work for my family on our Quarter Horse Ranch. The last several years she hasn't sold any dogs. She only lets them go to hand selected homes now and of course was glad for us to get some since her and daddy had started with them together anyway. We had no idea she had kept the line all this time.
