Saturday morning was opening day for the special youth weekend. I told my son, Archer, a couple of years back when he turned 7 years old I would take him deer hunting. Well, he turned 7 a few weeks back and he didn't forget.
We got into the stand a little after 6 am and within 5 minutes he was snoring loudly. I guess the drool running down his cheek woke him up just after the sun came up. ;D He sat quietly and was watching intently at the different clearings. This lasted an incredible 20 minutes before he asked what time it was and began to figet. Then came his next whisper, "Daddy, I need to go pee!" OK, my fault for not making sure he went before we got to the blind. We waited as long as he could stand it.... about 2 more minutes and then climbed down. He did his business and we decided to check out an oat field just on the other side of the tree line we were hunting. We hadn't made it 50 yards from the blind when we spooked three deer that were heading in our direction. Of course they immediately retreated for the nearest cover with their big white flags a waving. Archer saw them and wanted to get back in the blind and wait for them to come back. I thought to myself' "yeah right". The deer around here are not that forgiving, but they didn't seem that spooked and they never snorted, so I figured, what the heck. We climbed back in and settled back in for the long wait that would probably never come and then after an agonizing 10 minutes the first deer head poked out from behind the bushes. There were two medium sized does and a button buck. Archer, of course became very excited. It did not matter to him that there was not a mature buck in sight because as the told me he just loves to eat deer meat, so he picked out the largest doe and waited for the clear shot and when it came he put her down with one shot. I did have to help him hold the rifle steady but he did everything else. Let me tell you it was really awesome to see the jubilation in his eyes and the excitement on his face when he saw the deer go down.
Of course now he is spoiled in thinking that it doesn't take long to go deer hunting because when we came in to tell his mom that he got one he noticed the time on the clock, 8:00 am. "Hey," I heard him say, "that didn't take long at all!" Well, then again maybe this was a sign that his hunting luck will be better than mine.
