What does everyone use for deer ? .... I started with a 30-06 ..... shot several with a .44 Mag and now I am using a 7mm Mag (since deer are so hard to kill an all )

.243 I think the accuracy and range of a .243 makes it the ideal deer rifle.

That ain't nothing EJ.....I hunt with a 340 weatherby mag! LOL! I got it for elk hunting because I lost a real nice bull in Colorado hunting with my 270. The 340 is rigged with a Swarovski 4 by 12 scope with the TD redical. You know them deer in Oklahoma are BIG....lol If you place the shot properly it doesn't hurt one bit of the meat and it really doesn't do too much damage. The bullet has so much velocity it just pokes a little hole. I have yet to loose an animal shot with this gun. I'll take my 243 and my 270 but they probably won't leave the cabin. KO

I shot a doe with a .444 Marlin one time ...... I thought I missed because she "dissapeared" .. but she had just fallen like a wet towel to a neck shot Wasnt it Elmer Keith that said something to the effect ... "If you are going to put a hole in something .... make a BIG one"

.280 Remington... had it about ten years now. Shot deer and hogs from 10 feet to 250 yards using 150 grain nosler partition.

A .270 is plenty gun for deer!!! and as with any caliber being a good shot makes all the difference. I took a shot ona big wide racked buck running a doe one tiime ( Frontal chest shot..stupid me) but it was the only shot I had. I was using a 30-06 with 165grn bullets. I dropped him on the spot....then he got up and ran a bit and fell hard again. I waited about 20 min then as I walked up to him he jumped up and ran ..... I looked for HOURS without as much as a drop of blood ...I was sick! SO I just take SIDE shots now ..and I havent had any get out of sight when hit.

I took my first deer as a youngster, with gramps. After my 4th one he said he was proud of the deer I shot but would help me with accuracy as I was just gettin lucky, Lucky I asked I was off by an inch or so! He thought I was aiming at the vitals when I hit below the ear, and thought the one 'tween the eyes was meant for the chest. Looking back the shots were probably 70-80 yards but seemed like a mile at 12 years old. This was a model 94 30-30 scoped at first then I had gramps take it off as I had a hard time to get the view full size as eye placement was hardest thing for me. Next 4 were open sights. My grandpa would raz me that he would not want to mount a head with a hole in it. He would take me into the bars and brag about my shootin' to the buddies trying to challenge them to outshoot me. If they accepted he said with the 94 open sights only. All the great white hunters withdrew at that point. I guess the Red Ryder did its job as my tutor. ;D

I bet that would have been a shock EJ, especially after being hit with a 30/06 . Its amazing how strong the "will to live" is in wild animals. I shot a big billygoat last weekend in the spine with a .22magnum and he got up again and started running, so I gave him 2 more in the head and he dropped in his tracks. I put the rifle down and was going to finish him off with the knife and the dam thing got up again and wasn't seen again

The last 3 or 4 deer I shot were with a win trapper 94 in .44mag .... open sights. I think its my favorite gun I own as far as shooting where I point it ..... no questions.

I have had goats get up on me before, but not from a shot/s to the back of the head. The billy goats have a very thick skull where the horns join to the head, and a .22 can often mushroom to soon. I have not been able to get any .22mag solids, only hollow points, and I am still using old ammo that came with the rifle, so I don't know how good it is. The neck shots usually drop them pretty good, but this time my son stood up to get a better look just before I fired, and I had to make a hurried shot before they ran out of sight. I was still suprised to see him get up again for the second time though, he looked like he was stone dead lol. Maybe I should leave the goat shooting to Erron lol, she still holds a 1 shot 1 kill record after 2 years.
